In the undying quest to ski year round, if once a month counts as year round, I found my self skiing the same 3 ‘lines’ August, September, October. It usually snows in October in LCC and there it was October 8th and we had a dusting maybe. When you are heading to Vermont October 16th, with nothing in the forecast in Utah, you have to get the skiing done. You can’t count on skiing VT in October, and that also costs like $50 dollars, no thanks!
Having year round snow close by is about as cool as summer gets. Yes summer, barbecues, shorts, bikinis, hikes, bikes and whatever else summer is fun for doesn’t compare to the thrill of snow covered mountains. Keeping the dream alive is what summer skiing is.
August was fun, because I decided to go skiing at 8 pm. Luckily the permanent snow in the devils castle is about 30 minutes away from a parked car. Right at sunset I am sitting up on a rocky mountain waiting to ski. The sunset that was going on around me was one of the most amazing things i’ve seen. An orange glow took over the earth like I had never seen before. The skiing was fine but the skiing brought me to a unique place to catch a view of an insane sunset.
September ended up scaring me a little bit, I made the trek back alone to the castle on my bike. I biked all the way to the bottom of the apron where the boulders start. Up top rocks were raining on me, as there was just recent snow. The new snow covered up sharp chunks of limestone that could grab the skis of the off balanced and send a tattered body hurdling down the rocky apron.
October was the most fun. My Buddie Matt whom has joined me in many crazy antics decided he would come skiing with me when we talked in the am. Cool, a partner. Friends can always make less than ideal conditions ideal. Once again the trek back to AltA’s summer snow was made. Once again the surface snow was fresh, and helped us avoid skiing directly on gunpowder. A few laps were had a few beers shared, and Matt skied for his first time since April, I skied my 51st month in a row and can now comfortably travel to Vermont with my personal record still intact.
